A forest fire broke out near Kattery in Coonoor Forest Range on Sunday night, destroying vegetation on over two acres of land.
The fire caused panic and concern among motorists travelling on the Mettupalayam-Coonoor Road, as the fire destroyed large eucalyptus and wattle trees along the stretch. Forest department officials, police and Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot.
Coonoor Forest Range Officer K.Periyasamy said that the fire could have been man-made. After being informed of the fire, a team of forest department staff, with assistance from the fire department, rushed to the spot and contained the fire by laying fire lines and using “counter fire” to control the blaze. They then used water to put out the fire.
This is the first major fire in the Coonoor Forest Range this year, and fire teams have been specially instituted and prepared to deal with any major blazes in the Nilgiris North Forest Division. Fire lines are also being laid by the forest department in zones where forest fires have occurred in the past.
