Two persons were killed and another injured in a snow avalanche at Rangwar forest in Warnow, about 40-kms from Kupwara district headquarters.
The deceased were identified as Bashir Ahmad Hajam son of Muhammad Younis Hajam and Mamdin son of Najamdin Hajam of Rang Warnow of Lolab area.
Abdul Rashid Hajam, who survived the avalanche, said they had gone for hunting to the forest Wednesday.
Rashid said the avalanche gave them to run for safety. He too was buried neck deep into snow and slowly pulled himself out, he said.
A rescue operation carried out by 70 local volunteers with assistance from police, SDRF and army led to the recovery of the bodies on Thursday morning.
“It is unfortunate that we lost our young brothers. The authorities had issued avalanche warning,” said Tahir Ahmad of Rang Warnow.
Sub-divisional magistrate Lolab Ahmad Hussian said the administration was informed about the incident in the late evening and it was not possible to launch rescue at that time.
Last year in March, a snow avalanche hit Darpora area of Lolab in which three persons were killed.
