IMD predicted Cyclone YAAS to cross between Paradip and Sagar island around Balasore during the afternoon of 26th May in the shape of ‘ Very Severe Cyclonic Storm’
Kendrapara, Balasore, Jagatsinhpur, Bhadrak, Mayurbhanj districts have been kept on extremely high alert
“Red Alert” ( Extremely Heavy Rainfall) warning issued by IMD Bhubaneshwar for Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Jagatsinhpur & Balasore districts for 25th and 26th of May. Wind speed of 150- 160 kmph gusting to 180 kmph is expected
“Orange Alert” ( Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall) issued for Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khorda and Puri
NDRF has already committed 112 teams to be deployed in 5 states and 1 UT . 52 teams in Odisha, 45 teams in West Bengal and rest in Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Andman & Nicobar islands
Paradip Port Trust has suspended operations from the afternoon on 25th May to avoid any damages and destructions
As informed by NDRF, a total number of 8,09,830 people have so far been evacuated from the low lying areas of 14 districts of West Bengal whereas Odisha government has evacuated about 2 lakhs people from the vulnerable locations in the coastal districts
Indian Army, Eastern Command has deployed a total of 17 integrated Cyclone Rescue and Relief Columns, comprising specialized personnel with associated equipments and inflatable boats.
Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy asked Collectors of three north coastal districts- Vishkhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam to be on a very high alert in view of the cyclone
In Odisha , Massive evacuation underway. About 2 lakh people are already evacuated to 6900 cyclone centers including 4500 pregnant and lactating women. Local Civic Administration and police are on joint evacuation operation; 32 MDRF, 200+ ODRAF, and 100+ Odisha Fire Brigade Teams on ground; Marine Police, Coast Guard and Indian Navy on standby.
By the evening of 25th May, Cyclone YAAS intensified into Very Severe Cyclonic Storm as per IMD
Yaas likely to make landfall near Dhamra Port in Odisha’s Bhadrak district early on Wednesday
Meanwhile a Tornado like event occurred in Hooghly and North 24 Pargana district killing at least 2 and damaging over 80 houses
