Delhi NCR: Several areas and parts were found submerged underwater after a heavy downpour lashes national capital and the neighbouring region on 20 August 2020, Thursday morning. Damage to various properties, uprooting of trees were reported.

122.8 mm rain was recorded by The Aya Nagar Weather station between 8:30 am Wednesday and 8:30 am Thursday i.e. 11 times higher than the normal showers in Monsoon season.

Waterlogging caused “Major Traffic Disruptions” and triggered long Traffic snarls in the low lying areas on the same day. May videos were also circulated in social media where one can see cars and roads submerged in water, children playing in the flooded areas, water reaching up to their knees, parks turned into swimming pools and power cuts in several regions.

Overall, Delhi-NCR has recorded 520.8mm of rainfall, 68.2 mm(15 percent) more than the usual 452.6 mm of showers since 1 June, when the monsoon season started.

Residents living in a four-story building in Haryana’s Gurugram vacated it when they realised than the building has been bent on one side after the downpour.

The damage of seven cars was also reported after a school wall in Saket, south Delhi collapsed over them after the heavy rain. People also complained of water entering their houses or basements after waterlogging while some blamed government for their mismanagement.

The head of the India Meteorological Department’s regional forecasting centre, Kuldeep Srivastava predicted that the moderate rain will continue till Friday morning.  He also predicted that there will be another spell of rain which will begin from 25 August 2020.
