NEWS IN BULLET POINTS A&N, Cyclone YAAS, NDRF, odisha, West Bengal
- The depression is formed over the Bay of Bengal at 16.5N 90.0E, 683 km south-southeast of Kolkata
- Likely to become a Cyclonic Storm and later a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm by the 26th of May
- As per IMD, Cyclone YAAS is expected to cross West Bengal and N Odisha coast by the 26th of May evening as a “Very Severe Cyclonic Storm” with a wind speed of 155- 165 kmph. gusting to 185 kmph
- Once fully formed, Cyclone is likely to cross North Odisha- West Bengal between Paradip and Sagar island by the evening of 26th May
- As of 23rd May, the Indian Air Force has airlifted 950NDRF personnel and 70 tonnes of cargo from various places such as Jamnagar, Varanasi, Patna, and Arakkonam to Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar and Port Blair in 15 Aircrafts<
- IAF has kept one C-17, one IL-76, three C-130, four AN-32, and two Dornier transportation Aircraft on readiness for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief
- Indian Navy has also made essential preparedness to deal with any eventuality. Four Diving teams and Ten flood
- Relief columns are ready at Kolkata, Bhubaneshwar, and Chilika. Seven flood relief teams and two diving teams are also ready at different locations in Andaman & Nicobar islands

– As per the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), 4526 fishing boats of Maharashtra and 2258 boats of Gujarat returned back safely with the support of ICG
– ICG rescued 12 fishermen stranded off Kochi coast /br>
– “Tauktae” intensified into ‘ Extremely Severe Cyclone’ at 0530 hours and was lying 160 km. WSW off Mumbai coast
– Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport closed operations almost for the whole day
– Red Alert announced in Raigarh district and Orange Alert in Mumbai in the morning
– ‘Worli Sea Link’ in Mumbai closed for traffic operations
– Monorail services suspended
Gujarat evacuated about 2 lakh people from 18 districts along with the coastal areas
– ONGC operated Barge with 261 people on board went adrift off the Mumbai coast. INS Kochi was sent for rescue. Shortly another Barge of ‘GAL Constructions’ with 137 people on-board about 8 nautical miles from Mumbai reported stuck. INS Kolkata was sent for rescue
– Heavy to very heavy rainfall reported over N. Konkan including Mumbai
– Rainfall recorded today from 0830 to 2030 hrs – Mumbai – 20.2 cm; Santacruz- 21.4 cm
– BMC’s automated weather station recorded a wind speed of 111 kmph. at Colaba. At 2 pm, the wind speed was 114 kmph
– The center of the cyclone is expected to cross the Saurashtra coast to the east of Diu by today’ midnight
– A widespread power outage reported late-night from Rajula and Jafrabad taluka of Amreli district and Kodinar and Una in neighboring Gir Somnath district
– As per IMD, the landfall process completed late at night on Monday in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat where Severe Cyclonic Storm weakened to very severe cyclonic storm

– Cyclone “TAUKTAE” assume the category of “Very Severe Cyclonic Storm”
– Hits coastal areas of Goa disrupting trees, power supplies etc.
– Maximum Sustained Surface Wind Speed may varies from 135 kmph to 155 kmph gusting up to 175 kmph.
– Tauktae may likely to reach Gujarat coast by the morning of May 18.
– Tidal waves may likely to inundate coastal areas above astronomical tides.
– In Kerala , two people are reported dead due to rain and tidal impacts with widespread uprooting of trees, waterlogging, disruption of powers etc. since Friday night.
– NDRF has increased number of teams from 53 to 100 to be deployed to Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Goa and Maharashtra.
_ PM Narendra Modi reviewed preparedness measures with NDMA, MHA,IMD and other line departments.
– In Chellanam, Kerala , 3 Naval diving teams and one Quick Reaction Team from Southern Naval Command has been deployed.

– In the next 4 days, the deep depression in the Arabian sea is likely to intensify into a “very severe Cyclonic Storm”.
– Wind speed may be 150-160 kms. per hour gusting up to 175 kmph.
Tauktae may likely to reach Gujarat coast by the morning of May 18.
-Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding a high level meeting today with the National Disaster Management Authority and other line departments to review the cyclone preparedness.
-NDRF has deployed at least 29 teams to potential areas to be affected by cyclone . 29 more teams of NDRF are kept on standby.
